After spending ~378 days inside a 1,580 square meter 3D-printed space at the Johnson Space Center, four NASA crew members have emerged from their simulated Mars habitat as part of the Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog (CHAPEA) project, which commenced on June 25, 2023.
The CHAPEA-1 mission’s goal was to monitor human health within the expected variables of Mars' limited resources. The crew members undertook "Marswalks," grew and harvested vegetables, maintained their equipment, and worked through possible issues, including communication delays with Earth and isolation.
NASA also confirmed that it is planning two additional CHAPEA missions. In February 2024 , NASA put out an open call application, searching for potential volunteer crew members for the upcoming CHAPEA-2, which closed in April 2024.
