Meta's Quest no longer requires Boundary for mixed reality apps

Product updates

  • Meta has launched a new feature that allows developers to disable the Boundary system when using passthrough in mixed reality (MR) apps on the Quest headset. The Boundary system, previously known as Guardian, was designed to prevent users from inadvertently leaving their play area in VR experiences.

  • In MR apps, the Boundary system is redundant because users can see the physical environment through the headset's passthrough capabilities. However, Meta had previously enabled the security feature, and only a few select apps were allowed to disable it. With version 66 of the Meta XR Core SDK, all developers can suppress the Boundary visibility only when passthrough is rendered.

  • When an app switches to VR mode, the Boundary system will be reactivated for safety reasons. Developers will need to implement this change in their apps, resulting in delays before offering a more immersive and less obstructed MR experience without the boundary system.
