Vertical Aerospace, a UK-based global aerospace and technology company, has unveiled its VX4 prototype which was initially written off in August 2023 due to certain failures with the propeller blade.
Vertical Aerospace claims the new aircraft includes an increased proportion of technology and components sourced from its core supply chain at 60%, compared to 10% on its previous prototype. The aircraft power-to-weight ratio, with the inclusion of its new electric propulsion units (EPUs), has reportedly increased by 20%, which should aid it in reaching the VX4's target cruise speed of ~240 kmph.
The new prototype has completed systems and aircraft testing and commissioning, and Vertical Aerospace is currently working with the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to gain approval for flight operation. Vertical Aerospace aims to receive certification and service entry for its eVTOL operations by 2026. It is also developing a second VX4 prototype, which is expected to complete production and fly by the end of 2024.
