Braskem announces first sale of chemically recycled polypropylene to Georg Utz AG

Partnerships

  • Braskem, a Brazilian petrochemical and biopolymer company, has reported its first sale of chemically recycled polypropylene (PP) under its Wenew brand to Georg Utz AG, a Swiss manufacturer of reusable transport packaging.

  • Wenew is produced from hard-to-recycle plastic waste, which has been chemically converted into pyrolysis oil. The oil is subsequently refined for reuse in producing new plastics. Wenew is reported to have ISCC+ mass balance certification and be suitable for food transport packaging.

  • Analyst QuickTake: In January 2024 , the company partnered with Shell Chemicals to produce the Wenew circular polypropylene from mixed plastic waste using pyrolysis. The pyrolysis process was carried out at Shell Chemical’s Netherlands plant, and the conversion to PP happened at Braskem’s facility in Germany.
