VRChat, a social VR platform, has introduced beta support for hand tracking on its PC version through the SteamVR Skeletal Input system. This feature is available in the open beta of the PC version, allowing users to experience hand tracking on more powerful hardware.
The new hand-tracking support includes the finger gesture control system originally designed for the Quest series of headsets. To use hand tracking on PC, users need software that supports forwarding hand tracking to SteamVR Skeletal Input, such as the latest beta of Virtual Desktop for Meta Quest headsets, ALVR for Apple Vision Pro, or an open-source SteamVR driver for the Leap Motion 2 addon for native PC VR headsets.
Analyst QuickTake: VRChat continues to make development improvements to its platform despite laying off 30% of its staff in June 2024 , stating that it was still in a sound financial position. The restructure came in light of slower-than-expected growth in the VR market and the company's over-hiring in 2021.
