Co-founder of OpenAI John Schulman announced his departure from the company, taking up a position in Anthropic.
Schulman left OpenAI to shift his focus to AI alignment and enhance technical work at Anthropic.
Schulman completed his Ph.D. in electrical engineering and computer sciences at UC Berkeley and was pivotal in creating the AI-powered chatbot platform ChatGPT in OpenAI. He later led the company’s alignment science endeavors.
Analyst QuickTake: Several of the company's advocates for AI safety have left or been let go in the last few months. In May 2024, Ilya Sutskever, OpenAI's co-founder and chief scientist, announced his departure from the company claiming personal endeavors as the reason. On a separate note, former OpenAI researcher Jan Leike joined Anthropic in May to lead its new Superalignment team.
