The Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs and the US Secretary of State have signed an agreement marking Australia's entry into the Landsat Next program.
The Landsat Next is an Earth observation satellite mission collaboratively led by NASA and the US Geological Survey (USGS). Set to launch in 2031, the mission aims to capture images at a super-high resolution, supporting governments and organizations in managing crops, enhancing urban environments, and improving responses to natural disasters.
The Australian Government has committed AUD 207.4 million (~USD 136 million) to Landsat from its 2024–25 budget over the next four years, with AUD 38.2 million (~USD 25 million) earmarked each year after that.
Under the agreement's provisions, Geoscience Australia, the Australian Government's geoscientific research agency, will deliver an improved ground station in Alice Springs along with advanced spatial data processing and analytics capabilities.
