Microsoft reportedly orders Samsung microOLEDs to develop new XR device

Partnerships
Industry news

  • Microsoft has reportedly ordered micro-OLED display panels from Samsung for a new generation of mixed reality devices. The order could reach hundreds of thousands of units, with the device potentially launching as early as 2026.

  • The alleged Microsoft XR device is said to focus on content consumption such as games and movies, rather than metaverse applications. This approach potentially positions the device as a competitor to Apple's Vision Pro headset.

  • This move suggests that Microsoft is restarting its XR hardware ambitions after abandoning its Windows Mixed Reality platform and experiencing stagnation in its HoloLens AR platform.

  • Analyst QuickTake: The potential micro-OLED order could be related to the company’s partnership with Meta in April 2024 to develop a limited edition Xbox-inspired Meta Quest VR headset. In contrast, Microsoft laid off 1,000 employees belonging to its mixed reality division to streamline costs.
