Huhtamaki, a global consumer and specialty packaging manufacturer, is collaborating with sustainable paper packaging supplier Seda International and Starbucks to launch compostable cups specifically for cold beverages at selected stores. The first part of this pilot roll-out will take place in California and Minnesota.
The compostable cups are made from a mixture of double-walled paperboard with a bioplastic liner, and will be supplied by Seda, while Huhtamaki will supply the molded fiber lids. The cups are set to debut at 24 specific stores with potential for more locations in the future.
Analyst QuickTake: In June 2024 , Huhtamaki partnered with British sustainable plastic materials company Xampla to secure exclusive rights to deploy Xampla's bioplastic coating, "Morro," in corrugated board food service containers. The collaboration with Starbucks has the potential to roll out the technology not only to other major foodservice brands but also has a wider potential in the wake of evolving packaging regulations.
