Plant-based Dairy & Egg

Bill reintroduced to prevent the labeling of plant-based products as “milk”

Regulation/policy

  • Four members of Congress representing Vermont, Wisconsin, and Idaho have reintroduced a bill that will prevent labeling products made from nuts, seeds, plants, and algae as “milk,” “yogurt,” or “cheese.”

  • The bill calls on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to enforce its regulations that define milk and cream and stop labeling non-dairy plant-based products with the above dairy terms. The bill has 33 co-sponsors in the US House.

  • According to the representatives who reintroduced the bill, labeling non-dairy plant-based products as milk, yogurt, and cheese misleads the US consumer. They also claim that such marketing efforts by these companies have already negatively impacted US dairy farmers.
