The UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has announced an investigation into Amazon's USD 4 billion investment in Anthropic, a company specializing in developing AI models and apps.
The investigation is to determine whether the collaboration will hinder competition in the UK landscape. Following initial examination, the CMA claims adequate information about the partnership to conduct a formal inquiry. The regulator has up to 40 business days to decide if the transaction could obstruct competition, thus requiring a detailed "Phase 2" investigation.
Analyst QuickTake: This is not the first time Britain's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has announced investigations into Amazon. A few months back, it announced that it would investigate recent AI acquisitions by Microsoft and Amazon, prompted by concerns over the potential disruption of competition in the AI industry. This April, EU antitrust regulators also looked into Microsoft's USD 13 billion investment in OpenAI; however, they concluded that it is not an acquisition and does not require a formal investigation.
