Nvidia introduces ‘StormCast,’ an AI model for weather prediction

Product updates

  • Nvidia has launched StormCast, a GenAI model for high-fidelity atmospheric dynamics (weather prediction at mesoscale) for disaster planning and mitigation.

  • The company claims the model can predict future outcomes based on past ones, offering forecasts with lead times of up to six hours. Nvidia also claims it can predict over 100 variables, such as temperature, moisture concentration, wind, and rainfall radar reflectivity values at multiple altitudes. The model enables scientists to confirm the realistic 3D evolution of a storm's buoyancy.

  • The company claims the forecasts are up to 10% more accurate than the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's state-of-the-art 3-kilometer operational convection-allowing model.
