The UK Space Command has launched its first military satellite, Tyche, on SpaceX's Transporter-11 rideshare mission. The military satellite will support the UK's Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities.
Tyche is the first satellite fully owned by the UK Ministry of Defence. It is being designed and built in the UK through a GBP 22 million (~USD 29 million) contract awarded by Defence Equipment & Support to Surrey Satellites Technology Limited (SSTL).
Tyche weighs 150 kg and will operate in low-Earth orbit for five years. During this time, it will provide timely space-based images and videos to support the UK Armed Forces. The satellite's tasks will include monitoring natural disasters, developing mapping information, monitoring environmental conditions, and tracking the impact of climate change.
