NEAR Protocol deploys major upgrade to improve scalability and usability of blockchain

Product updates

  • Near Protocol, a layer-1 blockchain, has deployed a major upgrade called “Nightshade 2.0,” which aims to improve the blockchain's scalability and usability.

  • The upgrade is a key step in NEAR's initiative to integrate "sharding" into its core architecture. It involves dividing the blockchain into smaller segments to enhance scalability, enabling the network to handle more transactions at a lower cost.

  • In addition, NEAR validators are no longer required to store a shard's state locally. Instead, they can obtain the necessary data, or "state witnesses," from the network to validate state changes. This enhances the performance of individual shards and increases the network's capacity to support additional shards.

  • Analyst QuickTake: Earlier this month, NEAR Protocol launched Chain Signatures , a technology that allows smart contracts to sign transactions across multiple blockchains without relying on cross-chain bridges. This simplifies multichain dApp development and enhances NEAR’s usability.
