The Better Meat Co. receives USD 1.4 million in grant funding from US Defense Department

Funding

  • Mycoprotein ingredient producer The Better Meat Co. received a USD 1.4 million grant from the US Department of Defense (DoD) as part of the Distributed Bioindustrial Manufacturing Program (DBIMP).

  • The funding will be used to scale up the production of Rhiza, the company's proprietary mycoprotein ingredient, which is already being produced in large quantities at its Sacramento pilot plant.

  • Analyst QuickTake: The Better Meat Co. recently received the FDA's "no questions" letter, confirming Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) status for Rhiza. The USDA also deemed Rhiza suitable and safe in animal-based meat and poultry products, a first for any mycoprotein. In addition to these milestones, the company also announced a reduction of over 30% at scale in production costs for Rhiza, enabling it to target price parity with commodity beef prices.
