Mycoprotein ingredient producer The Better Meat Co. received a USD 1.4 million grant from the US Department of Defense (DoD) as part of the Distributed Bioindustrial Manufacturing Program (DBIMP).
The funding will be used to scale up the production of Rhiza, the company's proprietary mycoprotein ingredient, which is already being produced in large quantities at its Sacramento pilot plant.
Analyst QuickTake: The Better Meat Co. recently received the FDA's "no questions" letter, confirming Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) status for Rhiza. The USDA also deemed Rhiza suitable and safe in animal-based meat and poultry products, a first for any mycoprotein. In addition to these milestones, the company also announced a reduction of over 30% at scale in production costs for Rhiza, enabling it to target price parity with commodity beef prices.
