Niantic releases Scaniverse 4 to enable capture of 3D objects using Gaussian splatting

Product updates

  • Pokémon GO creator Niantic released Scaniverse 4, an updated version of its 3D scanning app. The new version allows users to capture places and objects in 3D using a Gaussian splatting technique, which provides more accurate and detailed representations with faster rendering.

  • Scaniverse 4 introduces a new process that enables users to capture "splats," which are object scans tied to location data. These splats can be placed on a map for others to discover and experience. Scanning involves moving around an object to capture it from different angles, similar to capturing a video. The app then processes the scan, allowing users to place the splat on a map, share the 3D model, or share the video.

  • Niantic claims that the new Gaussian splatting approach offers several advantages over the previous "triangle meshes" technique, including faster processing and more realistic renders with improved lighting and reflections. The company plans to use the technology to offer developers improved data and enhance game experiences, allowing virtual characters to better interact with real-life objects.

  • Analyst QuickTake: Gaussian splatting has grown in popularity as a technique for capturing 3D objects. For example, Varjo launched "Teleport" ( June 2024 ), combining 3D Gaussian splatting and machine learning to recreate a scene with accurate lighting, shading, textures, and reflections. Additionally, Evercoast acquired Depthkit ( June 2024 ), with the latter’s tech stack allowing for Gaussian splatting and radiance field rendering.
