IBM announces Telum II processor offering GenAI inference capabilities; to be released in 2025

Product updates

  • IBM announced the Telum II processor at the Hot Chips 2024 conference. It is expected to be available in 2025 and will expand AI capabilities on IBM Z systems.

  • The Telum II processor, developed using Samsung 5nm technology, features eight cores running at 5.5GHz, 40%  increased on-chip cache capacity, with the virtual L3 and virtual L4 growing to 360 MB and 2.88 GB, respectively, and an enhanced AI accelerator. Additionally, the company claims that the compute power of each accelerator is expected to be improved by 4x, reaching 24T operations per second (TOPS).

  • IBM claims this new product will provide significant performance improvements, support a broader range of AI models, and enable ensemble AI methods for use cases such as fraud detection and compliance with regulatory requirements in financial services.
