Meta announced that it would allow users between the ages of 10 and 12 to access Horizon Worlds; previously, the platform was only available to older users. The company is implementing this change with extensive parental controls and age-appropriate content ratings.
To access Horizon Worlds, preteens will need a parent-managed Meta account and must request access to the platform. Parents can approve individual experiences or set permissions based on age ratings. The platform will offer experiences rated for ages 10 and up, 13 and up, and 18 and up. Additional safety measures include disabled voice chat by default, offline status visibility, and a personal boundary setting to prevent other users from getting too close in virtual space.
Analyst QuickTake: Meta has been seeking to increase Horizon World’s player base. Previous efforts toward this include opening up its platform to teens in the US and Canada ( April 2023 ) and expanding the platform’s availability to 16 new countries ( June 2024 ). On the flip side, lowering the platform's accessible age limit opens up the company to potential criticism from children’s rights activists, given safety concerns.
