The UK Government, through BBSRC and Innovate UK, will invest GBP 15 million (~USD 19.8 million) to establish the National Alternative Protein Innovation Centre (NAPIC) at the University of Leeds. Public and private sector partners will contribute an additional GBP 23 million (~USD 30 million).
This investment brings the UK Government's total funding for alternative proteins to over GBP 91 million (~USD 120 million). NAPIC will focus on developing plant-based, cultivated, and fermentation-derived foods, involving over 30 interdisciplinary researchers and 120 international partners across four key pillars: Produce, process, perform, and people.
