Revoltech, a Germany-based startup developing bio-based alternatives to leather, has partnered with Volkswagen (VW) to develop LOVR (leather-free, oil-free, vegan, and residue-based), a sustainable hemp-based leather alternative for future car interiors.
LOVR is reported to be a 100% bio-based material made from industrial hemp residues and a special bio-based adhesive. It is claimed to be fully recyclable or compostable and can be produced on existing industrial plants. Volkswagen aims to potentially use this material in its models from 2028, pending further R&D.
Analyst QuickTake: The partnership with VW marks Revelotech’s first partnership with a major automaker. The company previously supplied the reinforcements for Melina Bucher’s 'Dreamer' bio-based handbag in July 2024 . The company raised an undisclosed amount of seed funding in May 2022 , aiming to develop and bring LOVR to market.
