Pony.ai gets permit for autonomous driving tests on Shenzhen expressways

Regulation/policy

  • Pony.ai, a China- and US-based self-driving vehicle technology company, has received a permit to conduct autonomous driving tests on expressways in Shenzhen, China, including the Guangzhou-Shenzhen Riverside Expressway, Nanping Expressway, and Shuiguan Expressway.

  • This development supports Pony.ai's plans to expand its robotaxi operations along airport routes and across contiguous urban areas.

  • Since launching in 2022, Pony.ai's autonomous ride-hailing service has expanded rapidly in Shenzhen, covering nearly 1,500 pick-up and drop-off points across core regions. It operates during peak traffic hours from 7:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

  • Analyst QuickTake: Pony.ai also obtained approval to road test fully autonomous robotaxis on public roads in Shenzhen in May 2023 and gained approval to launch commercial driverless robotaxi services in January 2024. Today’s permit will further help the company to expand operations in the region.
