Couchbase launches Capella Columnar; adds vector search to mobile database

Product updates

  • Couchbase, a cloud database platform company, has launched Capella Columnar on AWS, a new feature within its database-as-a-service offering. The company also added vector search capabilities to Couchbase Mobile and introduced a new free tier for developers.

  • Capella Columnar enables real-time data analysis alongside operational workloads within a single database platform. It addresses the challenge of parsing and transforming JSON data into an analytics-ready columnar format, supporting real-time, multisource data ingestion. The feature leverages Capella iQ, an AI-powered coding assistant, to write SQL++ for developers.

  • The company also states that adding vector search to Couchbase Mobile will enable offline-first Edge AI applications, allowing fast, secure, and reliable semantic search and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) applications that work without an internet connection.

  • Analyst QuickTake: These enhancements make the Couchbase platform more versatile and efficient for real-time data analysis and edge computing. They address the needs of developers working in environments with limited connectivity while maintaining high performance.
