ExSeed, a Bulgarian alternative ingredient startup, has developed a functional sunflower protein isolate as an alternative to soy and pea proteins. The product claims to be clean-label, nutritious, and non-allergenic, with a neutral taste and competitive pricing.
The protein isolate is produced using sunflower press cake, a byproduct of sunflower oil production. According to the company, it can be used in various plant-based products, including meat and dairy alternatives, drinks, supplements, and fitness foods.
Analyst QuickTake: While alternative protein sources like soy and pea are still prevalent in the market, some producers are moving toward alternative sources like yeast, rapeseed, Lemna, and mushroom mycelia due to allergen, taste and texture, and sustainability concerns. In contrast, sunflower protein contains all nine essential amino acids, is hypoallergenic, and has a relatively low environmental impact.
