LiBatt Recycling, a lithium-ion battery recycling subsidiary of UK-based Recyclus Group, has secured GBP 50,000 (~USD 65,800) in funding through the Clean Futures Accelerator Program led by Catapult Connected Places. Recyclus Group will match the grant with an additional GBP 50,000 (~USD 65,800).
The funding will be used to develop and validate a new recycling process for lithium thionyl chloride (LTC) batteries, commonly used in devices requiring long life spans such as fire alarms and smart meters.
The company reports that there are no established recycling methods for LTC batteries in Europe currently. The project aims to establish a safe and effective process to recycle these batteries, ensuring the recovered lithium is reintroduced into the supply chain. Recycling one tonne of LTC batteries can produce enough lithium to power seven large electric vehicles.
