The third Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellite, Sentinel-2C, has been launched on Arianespace's Vega rocket from French Guiana.
Sentinel-2C satellite, built by Airbus, will enter service in low Earth orbit at 780 km and will replace Sentinel-2A, which will retire and operate with Sentinel-2B.
The Sentinel-2-mission is based on a constellation of two identical satellites, flying in the same orbit every 100 minutes, covering all of Earth's land surfaces, large islands, and inland and coastal waters every five days. The satellite data gathered will be used for monitoring land use, soil sealing, land management, agriculture, forestry, and various natural disasters and will support humanitarian aid missions.
Analyst QuickTake: The launch date was confirmed by Arianespace recently in August 2024 , with the company announcing that it would be launched in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA).
