SpaceX, a private space exploration company, has announced plans to launch its Starship mega rocket on uncrewed Mars missions starting in 2026. If successful, crewed flights to Mars could begin as early as 2028.
Starship, the largest and most powerful rocket ever built, consists of two main components: a first-stage booster called Super Heavy and an upper-stage spacecraft called Starship. The fully stacked vehicle stands at ~400 ft tall and generates 16.7 million pounds of thrust at liftoff, nearly twice that of NASA's Space Launch System.
SpaceX aims to make Starship fully and rapidly reusable, with plans to land the Super Heavy booster back on the launch mount after each liftoff.
