Snap launches Spectacles 5 AR glasses at USD 1,200; partners with OpenAI and other companies for Lens improvement

  • Snap announced the developer-focused Spectacles 5 AR glasses, available through a program for USD 99 per month with a one-year commitment, totaling ~USD 1,200 pre-tax. The company is also partnering with OpenAI to allow Lenses to recognize and provide context for objects in the environment. Other partners (ILM Immersive, Niantic, LEGO, and Wabisabi Games) will develop new Lenses for the glasses.

  • The Spectacles 5 are standalone AR glasses powered by the new SnapOS. They feature a 46-degree field of view (FOV), 37 pixels-per-degree (PPD) resolution, and dual Qualcomm Snapdragon processors. The glasses use hand gestures and voice commands for navigation, including four tracking cameras, LCoS microprojectors, and adaptive tinting lenses.

  • The glasses offer a 100-inch screen from 10 ft away, with adaptive tinting for clear AR in any lighting conditions. A titanium vapor chamber provides 45 minutes of battery life, while Snap OS uses the Spatial Engine to render AR with just 13 ms latency.

  • Analyst QuickTake: The launch follows Snap’s fourth-generation Spectacles in May 2021 , which became the first device in its lineup to support AR features. The company’s focus on integrating AR features has been supplemented by the popularity of Snapchat’s Lenses, with some of its lenses having been viewed more than 10 billion times.
