The US Commerce Department has proposed prohibiting Chinese software and hardware in connected vehicles on American roads, citing national security concerns.
The proposal would effectively ban Chinese cars and trucks from the US market and require American and other major automakers to remove key Chinese components from US vehicles. The software ban would take effect in the 2027 model year, while the hardware ban would begin in the 2030 model year or January 2029.
The proposed regulation aims to address concerns about Chinese-connected vehicles collecting data on US drivers and infrastructure and potential foreign manipulation of internet-connected vehicles and navigation systems. The public has 30 days to comment on the proposal, which the Commerce Department hopes to finalize by January 20.
