NASA awarded Starfish Space, a company developing on-orbit satellite servicing solutions, a USD 15 million Phase III Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract for the Small Spacecraft Propulsion and Inspection Capability (SSPICY) mission.
The partnership aims to develop commercial inspection capabilities for defunct satellites in low-Earth orbit using Starfish Space's Otter spacecraft. The mission, scheduled to launch in late 2026, will inspect multiple US-owned defunct satellites to gather data on their condition and potentially service or deorbit them, contributing to NASA's Space Sustainability Strategy and efforts to mitigate orbital debris.
