British VR game studio XR Games is undergoing a major restructuring, resulting in 72 employees being laid off across various departments, including the entire IT team. The company, which employs over 100 people, has not yet released an official statement.
The layoffs come as a surprise, just after XR Games announced a collaboration with Sony Pictures Virtual Reality for upcoming VR game "Starship Troopers: Continuum."
A possible reason for the company's crisis could be the poor reception of Hitman 3 VR: Reloaded, released for Meta Quest 3 in June. The game received negative reviews from fans and critics and currently holds a 2.7 out of five-star rating on the Meta Horizon Store.
