Mistral, a French AI startup, has launched a new family of GenAI models called Les Ministraux, designed to run on edge devices like laptops and phones. The two models, Ministral 3 billion and Ministral 8 billion, are available for research purposes and through Mistral's cloud platform, La Platforme.
Les Ministraux models have a context window of 128,000 tokens, allowing them to process about 50 pages of text. They can be used or tuned for various applications, including text generation, on-device translation, internet-less smart assistants, local analytics, and autonomous robotics. Ministral 8 billion features a "sliding window attention pattern" for faster and more memory-efficient deployment.
Analyst QuickTake : Historically, Mistral has positioned itself as a leader in developing open-source models, with previous releases like Mistral NeMo 12B and Pixtral 12 billion showcasing its capabilities in enterprise applications. The focus on edge devices is particularly noteworthy. By optimizing models for laptops and phones, Mistral is tapping into a burgeoning market where users seek AI tools that do not rely heavily on cloud infrastructure. This approach not only enhances performance but also addresses privacy concerns, as data processing occurs locally rather than being transmitted to remote servers.
