Finnish startup Enifer has submitted a novel food application to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) for its Pekilo mycoprotein, marking the first such submission from a Nordic mycoprotein producer.
The company plans to file additional regulatory applications in Singapore within months, followed by submissions in the US for GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) status and in the UK.
The EU approval process could take up to three years, with Singapore likely the first market where the company receives regulatory clearance and launches its products.
Analyst QuickTake: Pekilo mycoprotein requires novel food approval in the EU as its production process, which uses agricultural sidestreams instead of forestry byproducts, differs from its historical use in the 1970s. Pekilo consists of up to 70% protein and beta-glucan, fibers, minerals, and fat. It is color- and taste-neutral and can be used in aquafeed, pet food, and alternative meat applications.
