SuperMeat, a cultivated meat company, has announced its ability to produce 100% cultivated chicken (85% muscle and 15% fat) at USD 11.79 per pound at scale, matching the price of premium US pasture-raised chicken. The company is currently awaiting regulatory approval and has received Kosher Certification .
The production process involves a nine-day cell growth phase followed by a 45-day harvesting period. The technology uses embryonic stem cells to produce both muscle and fat tissues, with fat grown in 24 hours and muscle cells in four days. The process requires 80% less land than conventional chicken farming and can produce three pounds of meat in two days.
According to SuperMeat, the technology can produce 6.7 million pounds of chicken annually, equivalent to 2.7 million chickens when scaled industrially. The company claims its product matches the cost, taste, and texture of premium chicken while offering a sustainable and animal-friendly alternative to traditional farming methods.
Analyst QuickTake: Cost parity is one of the leading roadblocks to the commercial launch of cultivated meats, along with other factors like taste and texture. This breakthrough will be crucial for commercializing SuperMeat's cultivated chicken products as well as expanding its current partnerships with PHW , Ajinomoto , and Migros .
