Hystar opens HyPilot hydrogen electrolyzer demonstration project in Norway

Product updates

  • Hystar, a Norwegian producer of proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers, has launched HyPilot, a demonstration project featuring a 1.5 MW containerized PEM electrolyzer at Norway's Kårstø Gas Processing Plant. The project is supported by partners like Equinor , Yara Clean Ammonia, Gassco, and ABB , along with funding from Enova.

  • HyPilot will test the company's proprietary PEM electrolyzer stack technology under various operating conditions, including intermittent power supply scenarios. The project is hosted at the K-Lab test center, the largest facility of its kind in Europe.

  • The company claims its technology will enable significant cost reductions, improved energy efficiency, and enhanced safety in green hydrogen production. Additionally, Hystar recently received a EUR 26 million (~USD 27.5 million) EU Innovation Fund grant to build an automated gigawatt-scale factory in Høvik, Norway, with plans to achieve 1.5 GW annual production capacity by 2027 and 4.5 GW by 2031.
