Unilever has hired investment bank Piper Sandler to manage the sale of The Vegetarian Butcher, a Dutch plant-based meat brand it acquired in 2018. Several potential buyers have already been approached.
The sale is part of Unilever CEO Hein Schumacher's Growth Action Plan 2030, which aims to streamline the company's portfolio by focusing on its "power brands" and divesting businesses worth around GBP 1 billion (~USD 1.3 billion) in annual sales.
The move comes despite Unilever's previous target to achieve EUR 1.5 billion (~USD 1.6 billion) in plant-based product sales by 2025 and is part of a larger restructuring that includes the potential sale of other Dutch food brands like Unox and Conimex.
The Vegetarian Butcher, currently available in 55 countries and over 40,000 retail locations, has reportedly been experiencing strong sales growth despite challenging market conditions in the plant-based sector.
