Primark extends Textile Takeback Scheme to Portugal

Geographic expansion

  • Primark, a multinational fast-fashion retailer, has expanded its Textile Takeback Scheme to its Portuguese locations. Through collection boxes in stores, customers can recycle clothing, home textiles, accessories, and shoes of any brand and condition. The program is managed in partnership with Yellow Octopus, which handles sorting and recycling.

  • The company reports that this expansion follows successful implementations in the UK, Ireland, Austria, Germany, and the Netherlands, aligning with Primark's sustainability goals and circular business ambitions. Proceeds from the program are intended to support UNICEF in providing underprivileged children emergency aid, healthcare, education, and hygiene services.

  • Analyst QuickTake: In October 2024 , the company partnered with WRAP, a UK-based sustainability organization, for a three-year initiative to enhance textile donation schemes and expand circularity efforts. Yellow Octopus was also an advisory partner for that collaboration.
