Open Cosmos, a UK-based space tech company designing and operating satellites, is leading a consortium that the European Space Agency (ESA) awarded a EUR 34.6 million (USD 36.5 million) contract to develop and launch a three-satellite constellation for the NanoMagSat mission.
The mission will deploy three 24 kg satellites with magnetometers and sensors to study Earth's magnetic field and ionospheric environment. Launches are planned for 2026–2027. Partners in the consortium are COMET-Aerospace, CEA-Léti, the Technical University of Denmark, the University of Oslo, the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris, and Université Paris Cité.
Analyst QuickTake: Open Cosmos and the ESA maintain a dynamic partnership to advance satellite technology. In May 2024 , ESA partnered with Open Cosmos on a EUR 60 million (USD 63.4 million) Earth observation project targeting agricultural and environmental progress in Greece. This was followed by the August 2024 launch of Phisat-2, an AI-enhanced CubeSat.
