X launches AI image generator Aurora through Grok assistant

Product updates

  • xAI has reportedly introduced Aurora, a new AI image-generation feature integrated into its Grok assistant on the X platform. The feature is available to all users through the Grok tab on X's mobile apps and web platform. Free users can generate up to three images daily while accessing Grok's chat features up to 10 times every two hours.

  • Aurora is designed to create photorealistic images, particularly excelling at landscapes and still lifes. The generator has minimal restrictions, allowing users to create images of public figures and copyrighted characters, though it restricts nude content. However, users have reported some limitations, such as imperfect rendering of hands and unnatural object blending.

  • Aurora is X's internal image-generation system, which is currently in beta, promises rapid improvements. The launch coincides with making Grok freely accessible to all users, removing the previous requirement of a monthly USD 8 Premium subscription.
