3D Systems, a 3D printing solutions provider, has entered a definitive agreement to sell its Geomagic software portfolio to Hexagon's Manufacturing Intelligence Division for USD 123 million. The transaction is expected to close in the first half of 2025.
The Geomagic portfolio includes software tools such as Design X, Control X, Freeform, Wrap, and Geomagic for SolidWorks. These products enable users to create digital models from physical objects for manufacturing, design from scratch, modify existing models, and perform quality control inspections.
Following the divestiture, 3D Systems will concentrate on its core software platforms, 3D Sprint, 3DXpert, and Oqton Industrial Manufacturing OS, to accelerate strategic software development and enhance AM capabilities. The company aims to leverage AI and machine learning capabilities to support high-volume production environments and critical industrial applications.
Analyst QuickTake: Hexagon, which mainly operates in the manufacturing technology space, has been steadily expanding its portfolio of 3D-printing software products over the past year. This news comes less than a month after the company introduced Advanced Compensation technology for metal 3D printing, which combines process simulation with geometry compensation to ensure large or complex metal parts distort into their intended shape during printing. It also marks the company's second acquisition in the space after CADS Additive, which it acquired in June 2023 . It leveraged the acquisition to integrate the latter's build preparation and support structure creation capabilities with its Simufact Additive process simulation software.
