Astroscale Holdings Inc., a Japanese developer of on-orbit servicing and related solutions, has reached a significant milestone with its ADRAS-J satellite approaching within 15 m of a rocket upper-stage debris. This marks the closest rendezvous and proximity operation (RPO) with space debris.
In its RPO operation, the ADRAS-J satellite approached within 15 m of the payload attach fitting, down from 50 m, relying on collision avoidance technology, fault detection and recovery systems, and autonomous abort measures for safe maneuvering.
The mission, commissioned by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), performed three fly-around inspections of the payload attach fitting, confirming no significant damage.
The mission's achievements provide critical data for the follow-on ADRAS-J2 debris removal mission and advance Astroscale's capabilities in on-orbit services and space sustainability.
