Substack, an online publishing platform, acquired Cocoon, a subscription-based private social networking app, to onboard product and design talent to help further develop the functionality of the Substack platform.
The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. While the Cocoon app will remain independent, its team will join Substack. The new design and engineering talent is expected to assist with the strengthening of Substack’s network of writers and readers by supporting its community-building initiatives.
Cocoon is a private social media app for close friends to share text and photo updates. Users can also use passive data from sources including mobile location data or fitness stats to update Slack channel-like feeds for specific groups of friends. Cocoon charges a USD 4 monthly subscription and does not rely on advertising or monetization of user data.
