Google commits AUD 1 billion to Australia’s tech economy

Industry news
Funding

  • Google has committed an investment of AUD 1 billion (USD 729 million) to Australia for the next five years, to build a Google Research Australia Lab to focus on key technologies including quantum computing and AI, among others. The investment package called the "Digital Future Initiative" is by far the company's largest commitment to the country.

  • The new research hub will focus on building the country’s tech infrastructure, enhancing the skills and technology expertise of local talent, and initiating partnerships with industry and academia. It is expected to create more than 6,000 jobs and support another 28,000 in Australia.

  • As part of the initiative, Google also plans to partner with Sydney-based Macquarie University to jointly research quantum computing.
