Microsoft announced that it has reached an agreement to acquire AT&T’s AdTech division, which consists of Xandr, an ad marketplace providing premium ad inventory for over-the-top (OTT), connected tv (CTV), and other video-based advertising.
Xandr was launched in September 2018 after AT&T acquired AppNexus for USD 1.6 billion earlier that year. AT&T stated that Xandr had recorded more than USD 2 billion in revenue in 2019. However, Xandr has reportedly faced numerous challenges including multiple leadership changes. Hence, reports stated that AT&T had been exploring a potential sale of Xandr since 2020.
Microsoft believes that the acquisition would complement its existing advertising offerings and help accelerate its growth in 1) digital ad delivery and 2) retail media business for the open web.
The financial terms and timeframe for the acquisition were not disclosed.
