Battery Resourcers to establish a new recycling facility in Georgia

Geographic expansion

  • Massachusetts-based cathode material recycler Battery Resourcers has announced its plans to open a USD 43 million worth lithium-ion battery recycling facility in Covington, Georgia. The new facility is expected to be operational in August 2022, creating 150 new jobs, and would reportedly become North America’s largest lithium-ion battery recycling facility.

  • The 154,000-square-foot Covington facility will have the capacity to process 30,000 metric tons of end-of-life batteries and battery scrap per year, which is equivalent to 70,000 vehicle batteries per year. The recycling process will generate battery-grade lithium, cobalt, and nickel back into the lithium-ion supply chain.

  • Analyst Quicktake: Last year, the company was looking to set up a new commercial-scale facility in the US and two new facilities in Europe, to be operational by the end of 2022. It was targeting a total recycling capacity of 30,000 metric tons via these three new plants. However, Battery Resources appears to have met its capacity target just with the new decided plant in Georgia. It has now set a long-term target to build new facilities across North America, Europe, and Asia to process up to 150,000 metric tons of lithium-ion batteries annually.
