Spotify shuts down in-house podcast studio

Management news

  • Spotify has reportedly closed down its in-house original podcast studio, Studio 4, and has laid off some of its 10–15 employee team. Despite reasons being officially undisclosed, some Spotify employees have claimed that better projects being allocated to other podcast studios, which were acquired by the company, may have led to Studio 4’s exclusion from the limelight and eventually to its cancellation.

  • Spotify’s acquired podcast studios include Gimlet, which was acquired for USD 230 million in February 2019, Parcast, acquired for USD 56 million in April 2019, and The Ringer, which was acquired for USD 196 million in February 2020.

  • Despite closing down Studio 4, Spotify has continued to make other investments in the podcast business during the past two years with acquisitions of companies, such as the podcast discovery platform Podz and the Australian podcasting platform Whooshka , and through an exclusive multi-year podcast distribution deals with prominent creators such as Joe Rogan and Alex Cooper.
