Britishvolt, a UK-based battery manufacturing startup, has partnered with metals and mining firm Glencore to build a lithium-ion battery recycling plant in the UK. The plant will reportedly be the first battery recycling plant in the UK and will also be Britishvolt’s first step toward battery recycling.
The facility will be built at Glencore’s site in Kent and will use 100% renewable energy to recycle batteries used in cars and electronic devices. The plant is expected to open in 2023, with a capacity to recycle at least 10,000 tonnes of lithium-ion batteries a year (equivalent to 50,000 electric car batteries). It is also expected to process battery scraps from Britishvolt’s gigafactory in Northumberland, UK, expected to come into operation by 2024.
The partnership is in line with the companies’ commitment to reducing carbon emissions and is also expected to support developing new battery recycling technologies.
