Britishvolt partners with Glencore for lithium-ion battery recycling in the UK

Partnerships

  • Britishvolt, a UK-based battery manufacturing startup, has partnered with metals and mining firm Glencore to build a lithium-ion battery recycling plant in the UK. The plant will reportedly be the first battery recycling plant in the UK and will also be Britishvolt’s first step toward battery recycling.

  • The facility will be built at Glencore’s site in Kent and will use 100% renewable energy to recycle batteries used in cars and electronic devices. The plant is expected to open in 2023, with a capacity to recycle at least 10,000 tonnes of lithium-ion batteries a year (equivalent to 50,000 electric car batteries). It is also expected to process battery scraps from Britishvolt’s gigafactory in Northumberland, UK, expected to come into operation by 2024.

  • The partnership is in line with the companies’ commitment to reducing carbon emissions and is also expected to support developing new battery recycling technologies.
