Kalera, a Norwegian hydroponic vertical farming operator, has announced that it has completed phase one of the construction of its Singapore facility at the Changi Logistics Center. The company expects first harvest by Q3 2022.
The facility in Singapore will produce leafy greens and vegetables using Kalera’s patented “Dryponics” technology, which keeps the roots of the plants intact to allow harvesting right before consumption. The 50 ft tall mega farm will be fully automated and is expected to produce more than 1,100,000 pounds of greens per year.
<ul><li>Construction of the facility began in October 2021 by &ever GmbH, which Kalera acquired last year. The project also received funding from the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) via the 30x30 Express Grant as a part of the country’s initiative to produce 30% of its food locally and sustainably by 2030.<ul>
<ul><li> Analyst QuickTake: With the new facility in Singapore, Kalera is expanding its presence to the Asian market. The company noted in August 2021 that with the acquisition of &ever GmbH, it expects to gain access to international markets such as the Middle East, Asia, and Europe. Kalera operates four facilities across Orlando, Florida, Georgia, and Houston and expects to launch new facilities in Denver, Honolulu, Seattle, St.Paul, and Minnesota in 2022.<ul>
