Alternative dairy startup ProProtein has initiated a seed funding round aiming to raise EUR 700,000 (~USD 761,648) to develop a scalable precision fermentation platform.
The funds will be raised in March and April after ProProtein’s announcement of a casein expression (an alternative for functional proteins in milk) by co-founder and CSO Tiina Tamm PhD. The company noted that it aims to optimize the yield and conduct safety analysis for the casein expression in its next funding round.
Estonia-based ProProteint uses precision fermentation of yeast to develop the four main types of proteins in casein. The startup uses synthetic biology to develop yeast strains that synthesize dairy proteins, which can be used to make animal-free products such as cheese and yogurt.
