Living Greens Farm, a Minnesota-based company that grows salads, microgreens, and herbs using a proprietary aeroponics growing system, has announced plans to invest USD 70 million to build a new vertical farm in Muncie, Indiana. The facility is expected to open in early 2023.
The company will convert a 200,000-square-foot building into an aeroponic vertical farm that will feature advanced technology including the automation of seeding, transplanting, harvesting, processing, and packaging operations. The facility will produce its existing portfolio of leafy greens and salad kits expecting to deliver five million pounds of produce per year, saving up to 103 million gallons of water per year.
The facility will also serve markets covering cities in the north, south, and east US, which include Pittsburgh, Detroit, Milwaukee, and Kansas City, allowing the company to better supply its retail partners, including leading retailers like Walmart and Whole Foods.
<ul><li> Analyst QuickTake: In February 2021 , the company announced that it will expand its geographical reach by selling to specialty, independent, and co-op retailers in the Upper Midwest. At the time, the company also entered into a distribution agreement with UNFI Produce Prescott to distribute the vertically grown produce across the region. With this new facility, Living Greens Farm strengthens its presence in the Midwest and is preparing itself to meet the demand for its products.<ul>
