OnePointOne, a vertical farming company that develops and sells aeroponic growing systems and vertically grown leafy greens and herbs, has partnered with California-based berry producer California Giant Berry Farms to introduce vertically produced strawberries to the market.
According to the partnership, both companies will work together to develop “Opollo Three,” a vertical farming system for growing berries. OnePointOne will lead the development, which will be used by California Giant to support the latter in its field-grown strawberry production. The partnership will gradually focus on developing a strawberry breed suited for vertical farms, specifically for California Giant.
California Giant has also placed an equity investment in OnePointOne’s Series A funding round, with its President Joe Barsi joining OnePointOne’s board of directors.
OnePointOne also plans to offer its vertically produced berries through its Willo Farm, allowing customers to select, track, and monitor the growth of their berries via the Willo mobile app and have them delivered on a weekly basis.
OnePointOne plans to offer the Opollo Three system for commercial growers interested in producing strawberries. The solution is expected to be priced at USD 2 million, which includes ownership of an Opollo Three farm, industry intel and insight into exclusive trade data, and installation of the farm in the geographic region of choice. OnePointOne claims a two-year payback period for the investment.
<ul><li> Analyst QuickTake: The vertical farming space is seeing a number of players expanding their offering beyond vertically producing leafy greens. Last week, Bowery Farming announced the launch of their vertically produced strawberries at select retailers and restaurants in New York, while Plenty announced a partnership with Driscoll to build a vertical farm dedicated to producing strawberries. OnePointOne is now following suit.<ul>
